Physical Map of Western Europe
The North European Plains, (in parts of France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany) has impacted humans in many ways. Since it is home to many navigable rivers, such as the Rhine, Weser, Elbe, Oder, and Vistula, it has attracted many humans to settle in this region because the access to water is attractive to many people. The rivers allowed for early communication in between humans, travelling, and agricultural development. Because of this, The North European Plain is the most densely populated region of Europe. The Massif Central region was a barrier to transportation within France, thus providing an obstacle for humans. Volcanoes are heavily distributed around the area. As a result, this region is sparsely populated. The Alpine Mountains (located in southern France) has also discouraged migration due to the active volcanoes in this region and the barrier it provides between regions of Europe.
